You make it sound like there are people dying in the streets. That's ridiculous. It's not perfect, but anybody willingly paying out tens of thousands of dollars for something they could get for free is either crazy or swimming in cash. My worst experience with our health care system was one time I was hit by a car and ended up unconscious in the hospital. I woke up on a bed in a hallway. My leg wasn't broken, but I couldn't walk on it. As soon as they noticed I was awake, they discharged me and wheeled me to the front door. They refused to wheel me to the bus stop or the taxi stand - the taxi stand was only a few feet away, and it was on hospital property, but I couldn't walk. They wouldn't give me crutches either. They said they were refusing to wheel me because of 'insurance issues'. Stupid... but I believe they're even worse with that sort of thing in the States with its predatory legal system. So I crawled over to a taxi and went home. Pissed me off at the time, but in hindsight it was no big deal.
