TIFU By finishing my PhD.

There's actually a lot of teaching jobs available now. It's just that the pay sucks, the system (in US public schools) is broken, and you don't get to teach your passion. Also, it's really hard work, like 60hrs/week for shitty money. If it isn't your identity, you aren't going to love it. If you don't love it, you aren't going to be a good teacher. Most aren't. I wasn't.

Source: wanted to teach at the university level/get a phd history. Realized that there was no money in it, and severely limited opportunities when I got deeper into grad school. I compromised and decided to pursue education. I Hated teaching, because you have to teach to a test (and it's more bureaucratic babysitting than exploring a subject). Now I just read in my spare time, and hope to make enough money to go get a doctorate (and do something that I care about and not have to worry about income). My historical interests aren't particularly popular right now, and that really matters in getting a job.

So now I run a small business.
