TIL crew members of the Challenger space shuttle survived the “explosion,” manually activated their emergency breathing packs, and were very likely alive for the full 2 minute and 45 second, 65,000 foot free-fall until their crew cabin crashed into the ocean.

I was a kindergartner near Houston at the time when it happened, and the Shuttle disaster took place on live TV (all space launches tended to interrupt programming in Houston on the major networks.) I was eating a sammich and watching tv before heading to the bus stop for afternoon school, when it was interrupted. As a kid who was huge into scifi watching a real space ship launch was always exciting... then the damn thing blew up.

All the moms at the bus stop were really shook up trying to put on a good face, I could easily say of my Kindergarten class had watched it blow up live. The teacher simply went about her usual lesson plan as if nothing happened. Weeks later, we had an someone from NASA (I can't remember who) come to our school and give a presentation about what happen with the accident and talk about going to space.
