You just clearly stated to him that you favor money over his presence. Sure you don't want him to live off you, but supporting him while he's looking for a job for you two to build your future on isn't freeloading. I don't know for how long you two have been together, but during a lifetime, it will happen that one will have to support the other (like losing a job, getting sick, going back to school...).

Now he's hurt, and he is reconsidering your relationship very seriously. Just think, would he blink if you asked him to pay for something for your own use? If you want that relationship to last you're better be apologizing, understand why he is hurt and fast.
