Too many downvotes?

I just want to say that though this subreddit is one of two that I frequent, I certainly don't love it. Just like all of reddit, it's an inherently flawed system that promotes like-minded thinking, and is in no way a good forum for finding new material. It's better than the majority of horrible subreddits, but generally there's not much of a community here, and when people interact, it's to point out that their opinion is invalid because they didn't like x anime.

What's the point of upvotes? To allow something to recieve the attention it deserves. If a post has 20 comments and 4 upvotes, what's the problem? It clearly is receiving that attention without the upvotes, meanwhile there are posts with no upvotes, no downvotes, and no comments that are completely ignored. Or there are posts with plenty of upvotes and no comments. A thread's score is largely irrelevant on this subreddit. Why do people upvote at all? To show where their interests lie. Everyone loves a good OP MC who's not a pussy, or talking about their favorite anime, or posting gifs, not so many like suggesting things based on people's past experiences with anime. Even making a conciuous effort to change that, by upvoting posts with no responses won't cause people to suddenly be interested enough with the post to comment. Why downvote? It's the opposite of an upvote. To show disinterest.

And comments. Why upvote? To show you agree. You're not supposed to, at least in the reddiquite, but that's how it works here. People post an anime name and maybe one or two words describing it, and it gets 8 upvotes and three responses saying "I agree. Literally this. I second that." Why is this the case? Because ultimately, this is a service. To suggest anime to the plenty of lurkers and nonsubscribers who browse the subreddit. They don't care if your karma is taking a hit, so long as the good anime gets sent to the top, while the bad anime is sent to the bottom.

Karma points are completely meaningless. They only become a problem when someone sees a post with a score of -1 and use that opportunity to be a dick and face no repercussions. If you're going to talk about people being mean and hostile, you have a case, but you sound like this is your first day on reddit if you're complaining that you're not getting your imaginary points.
