Toronto's rental market is downright scary right now

Thank you for explaining the dwelling type, now its clear. Its not an apartment, its a rooming house. Different laws, different situations. Unfortunately rooming houses have problems.

And me being a landlord, and a good one, I understand perfectly the situation. Your landlord is whats called a slumlord.

If you have wildlife entering the dwelling, and nothing was done, its fairly clear that the landlord does not give two fucks - or you are wrong. At that point, its incumbent on YOU to either fix, call the law, or to move out. Beef is not with you for expecting the fix from landlord - law is on your side - beef is with you for not taking it in your hands when its clear landlord wont fix it, by the sounds of it. You literally have options. Many options. And several of them would not result in you being evicted. But what do you do? Complain on a forum. Have you even tried the landlord tenant board? Does not sound like you did.

As for toxic environment facing renters - people get what they vote for. Majority votes for shiny face without thinking of long-term consequences - majority gets what they voted for.
