Trying to get in shape for the first time at 40....any advice and/or positive stories?

So, Ive never been a fitness person until a year ago. I think Ive been going to the gym for like 1.3 years at this point.

I'm only a bit younger than you, but I'm in the best shape of my life and it's not even close. Went from 24% bodyfat to variable between 17 and 19 currently. It's a noticeable difference.

But also, I'm at least twice as strong as I ever was. My cardio improved, even though I mostly did strength training. But my workouts are about 1.5 hours long and lifting can make you breathe like you just ran sprints. So, now I'm also surprisingly capable of running for 30 mins straight with no pauses to walk even though I didn't specifically train for that. It's nice.

Two things helped me. First, calorie counting. The fitness sub has a Google sheets spreadsheet that's really easy to use. Basically, it'll help you identify your TDEE. This is the number of calories where if you eat less than you'll lose weight, and more you'll gain it.

Second, personal training! It's expensive, but you can mitigate that by doing just a couple days a month. I did one training session per 2 weeks personally, mostly so I could have a trainer build me a sophisticated workout program to follow since I don't really know how to do that. Later on, you can stop training and just work off of the saved workout routines until you're comfortable making them yourself.

You're not too old! If you start this week, a year from now you could be in so much better shape! Just trust the process.
