U.S. Student Debt in `Serious Delinquency' Tops $166 Billion

My credit is gone. Constant harassing phone calls, they've even called my job a few times. Threatening mail.

They garnish my check by 20% I'm not sure if it can go higher than that, I can't afford to talk to a lawyer. They take my tax returns.

I don't mind them taking the tax returns, nor the garnishment at the moment ( I make so little I end up paying less via that method).

What bothers me is the nonstop harassment, the feeling that I can never go out on my own because 1) I can't afford it, 2) They'll come after me.

What bothers me the most is the compounding penalties added to the loans I owe. Defaulting adds 20-40% of the amount owed as a collection penalty. Plus all of the other penalties they've added over time. Fucking insane. And I'm afraid to even call them because not only are they incredibly nasty and manipulative, they'll start up with another round of harassment again.
