Unemployment is sometimes associated with an increase in happiness, new study shows. Although unemployed individuals generally feel less happy, the unemployed without financial problems feel an increase in happiness. The findings suggest that the main benefit of employment is related to income.

I thought that too, until I tried it. What really ended up happening was that I spent 10-12 hours a day browsing Youtube and image boards, stopping only to go to bed at 4AM and wake up at 2PM (Being able to sleep at any time for as long as I wanted didn't make me feel any less tired, if you're curious... And having 24 hours of free time didn't make me feel less rushed).

Or I would work obsessively on a project 10 hours a day for 1-2 months before the motivation dwindled and I went back to doing nothing.

When you have such an overabundance of free time, the default behavior is to chase dopamine to fill the gap, while thinking about vague plans for what you would like to accomplish, as time slips by.

It takes serious strategizing and willpower to get yourself to follow your plan for an "ideal day" for a week straight, and even then if you slip up a few times you have to get back on it fast or your new habits will disappear into the ether.

So yeah, for the time being I would say I prefer working, since it at least forces you into doing things on schedule. But you might have to go through a period of freedom first to find that out firsthand. YMMV
