"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." Why don't we do miracles?

1 Corinthians 13

8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of [c]prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part; 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. 11 When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I [d]became a man, I did away with childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. 13 But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the [f]greatest of these is love.

This passage is CLEARLY stating that they go away AFTER perfection comes, which I hate to break it to you hasn't happened yet.

Not some charlatan babbling like a fool claiming he is "speaking in the tongues of angels". Fake, fake, fake.

First of, I would like preface what I say with this. I'm southern baptist, I don't speak in tongues, and I have nothing but contempt for all the, as you put it, "charlatan babbling like a fool"'s of the world. Many are fake. However, you CAN NOT call them all fake without throwing the bible out the window.

1 Corinthians 13

If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels , but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.

1 Corinthians 14

Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. 2 For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one [a]understands, but [b]in his spirit he speaks mysteries. 3 But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation. 4 One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church. 5 Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying.

Verse 39

39 Therefore, my brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak in tongues. 40 But all things must be done properly and in an orderly manner.

Ok, so what does all that mean? Basically, it pretty clearly states that speaking in tongues is used primary to edify oneself, WHICH IS NOT BAD, we need edification. Tongues are real, just because you and I do not speak them does not mean they arn't, I haven't seen anyone raised from the dead but that doesn't mean god is unable to do it! We can NOT base theology on Our experiences+scripture. Rather our theology must be based purely on scripture and then our personal experiences must be viewed in that light. Personally, I don't really like tongues, I believe most people are fake, however fake or not if you sit and pray to god for an hour you are probably going to get SOMETHING out of it, nonsense coming out of your mouth or not. Furthermore these verses seem to indicate its not always interpreted and therefore not always understandable. I don't know about you, but I can't tell the difference between someone speaking nonsesne and someone speaking spanish, sounds the same to me BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW SPANISH. Tongues is GOING to sound like nonsense if god does not give you an interpretation. If done in a church service then there MUST be an interpreter and no more than 3 people can speak, thats the word, but if they are just privetly doing it in their pew during worship you have NO RIGHT to forbid them as verse 39 CLEARLY points out.

Just because you don't understand what they are saying does not mean that its not a real language. It is arrogant to think you can tell if its real or not by listening.

This is the problem with self-centered lukewarm "Christianity". So hungry for miracles that we imagine we're experiencing them.

In some cases yes, but Ive seen very few people participating in speaking in tongues who could be REMOTELY described as "lukewarm" ,most of them are completely sold out to god and have decided not to make excuses for scripture (like you have). The fact is they are much less afraid to lay hands on the sick and pray for them than most of us,and they actually believe god will heal. The true problem of of self-centered lukewarm Christianity is they are so scared to death that God might actually be real, and he might ACTUALLY STILL DO STUFF, because if thats true that means they have to change their life, it means its all real, it means god really does want them to actually be his hands on earth and that means they have to actually deny themselves, pick up their cross, and be willing to die for him, and most arn't willing to be counter culture in the least bit, so they selfishly twist scripture to deny the power of christ, to make vain arguments that god doesn't work like that anymore, because if he does he does it through us and that might mean actually getting up off your butt and praying for someone, and walking out on faith and actually DOING the stuff.
