[Video] How Content is Killing AAA Games - The Point

Obviously this is just my opinion, but there hasn't been a good AAA game since Dark Souls.

Maybe The Last Of Us, as I have no regrets about buying it. The only reason I'm on the fence is because, while the story was absolutely brilliant, I think the game relied on it a little to heavily to make the gameplay interesting. Without the story backing it with emotion, the gameplay became far less compelling. Still, overall it was a wonderful game with a robust campaign, and so I was happy with it. I just think Dark Souls is perfect.

Meanwhile, Dragon's Crown sneaked under most people's radar and was truly phenomenal. The way it blended sidescrolling beat-em-ups with RPG's was innovative and ingenious, and the randomly-generated dungeons later on in the game made it a truly unique experience. If there was still a player base for it, I'd still be playing it.

Anyway, I digress. The video is extremely accurate, but what I'm really trying to say, I suppose, is that this content bubble is something I think players let happen to them, to an extent. For instance, I took one look at Watchdogs and knew it was something I'd never play. I could see the disappointment from a mile away. And don't get me wrong - a lot of people still enjoyed the game - but I feel like a lot of people thought it was something new, but in reality, if you paid attention, you could kinda tell it wasn't going to be anything groundbreaking.

This is why I'm looking forward to AAA games like Bloodborne and Phantom Pain. They're very much based on franchises and ideas that exist, but at the same time the creators of are actually trying to do something different. Phantom Pain is the first Metal Gear in an open world. Bloodborne took the mechanics of a successful franchise and is applying them to something completely new. It's the developers that are trying to move things forward that will define this next generation of AAA games, and not only is it their responsibility to push things forward, but it is ours to support the ones who are doing it.
