Weekly Observations: What signs of collapse do you see in your region? [in-depth]

United Kingdom, outskirts of London.

I work in a hospital and we have been on Opel 4 for quite some time. This means that the hospital does not have the capacity for new patients, they are being extradited to hospitals as far away as 30 miles. Minor accidents and illnesses are being turned away at the door and referred out to the community services where before they would have been seen in hospital.

We received an email from the medical director telling all doctors to help the dwindling nursing staff out by administering drugs. This has never happened, doctors prescribe they do not administer on the whole.

All holiday for clinical staff has been cancelled for February due to staffing pressures. This has also never happened. Non-clinical staff now have the opportunity to work on the wards helping with stocking up and admin work.

Overtime is now permanently available in most departments. There are over 350 staff absent due to covid; shielding or isolating.

It’s unsettling at best. All the clinical staff I know are suffering.
