What activity is socially accepted but actually borderline psychotic?

My parents did this. When I was 15 1/2, I asked my mom to drive me to the DMV and help me get my paperwork together to get my driver’s permit. I knew the DMV was confusing and I have ADHD. She said “Nope, if you think you’re old enough to learn to drive, you’re old enough to solve those problems on your own.” I thought she was joking, but she wasn’t. I didn’t know what I was doing, so I looked up map directions to the DMV, which was only a few miles away. Walking distance, great. I walked there alone, and immediately got overwhelmed. I waited in the first line I saw, and when I got to the window, the employee was so much kinder than my parents ever had been. They didn’t yell at me for being in the wrong line, or laugh at me for wasting their time. They didn’t scold me for being unprepared. They just handed me the forms that I was missing, gave me instructions on how to fill them out, and pointed out the correct line that I needed to stand in. That was the moment when I realized my parents are fucking assholes.
