What are some tips for changing from an "I'll do it later" person into an "I'll do it now" person?

I found a trick for this that worked well for me.

As a Christmas present, I got this simple ring from my grandma. Not too flashy, but it's important, moreso because she died a week later.

So I've got this very important ring that means a lot to me. I've never worn rings or any jewelery for my whole life, even watches. And now I have this thing on my finger almost all the time. My hand feels different now than it did for my first 28 years. I feel it when I squeeze my hand, and hear it when it clinks on a glass or my steering wheel, or anything.

Then I realized I could take that strange new feeling of wearing a ring and use it as a mindfulness tool. I started by flossing my teeth every night when I take the ring off. So those things came hand in hand. Ring off, floss. And then I realized, if it works for floss, it should work for other stuff too. "Oh I don't want to do the dishes... Wahhh" but then I feel the ring and remember "oh yeah, just do the dishes it will take a second." Sometimes it's annoying actually, being reminded by a little piece of metal that I need to actually do the dishes and floss my teeth. Kind of like it's calling me out for being lazy. But it also reminds me that I'm doing a good job, because when I feel it or hear it clink, but I know I've been on top of all the things I should be, it's like a little "good job! You're not being lazy right now!"

It's kind of like my grandma gave me "not being lazy" as a christmas present.

Whether it's a ring, or a watch, or any sort of trinket, if you attach a meaning to it, it will have a meaning.
