What "asshole design" is so commonplace that we just accept it as part of our lives with no alternative?

If my sources are correct, they'd put anyone who wanted to through engineering school. Not so much for the arts. As for engineering, the market for morons is saturated. There is plenty of demand for competent folks. Unfortunately degrees don't guarantee that like they used to. I've seen outfits so desperate for a chemical engineer they'll hire a mechanical. It's stupid and they never listen to how and why; at least I haven't heard of deaths from it... yet.

In case you're curious mechanical engineers are like police. The entire profession is fucked it seems. While all police, in the US anyway, are drunk with power and will literally kill anyone who challenges them if they feel like it, mechanical engineers almost universally can't take a step back and see the bigger picture of a system. They've got to "fix" this or optimize that... and, when they do, it fucks the rest of the system.

Hell, I'm in the same boat as some of my clients. I need to hire someone and I'd pay upwards of $50/hr. I can't bring myself to do it because it'll be 6 months at least before I could have them doing more good than harm around
