What can you say to your SO parents during your first meeting to have them hate you forever?

I met my father in law close to a month after I married his then 17 year old daughter.....she let her family know by waiting until she went home for a spring break and telling them she was going to stay in school summer semester and move in with me. She thought that would ease them into things.

They responded by telling her they were pulling her out of school, moving her home, and that was that......

So she called me at 3am to come and get her.....and her son.....not mine. Now at this point I thought she told them we were married and they had a fight. Well turns out she told them we were married by taping a copy of our marriage license to her mothers vanity.

Her parents got to the campus police at around 8am. They called me and I being a 20 year old asshole.... asked them "whats the charge boss"
Umm we have your...inlaws...here...and they are quite upset.
and I interupted....
"Tell them their grandson is fine, their daughter is as well, we have all had a long night and are sleeping. Tell them to go home and we will call them tonight"
The officer says "son, they arent going to leave"
"Well, We will be there....just as soon as we wake up"

I sent her and my roommate to escort them back to my apartment. She didnt think sending me was a good idea and having her son IN OUR home was very important to her at that moment.

Well when they got there....her mother was insane....she hated me already...in fact her hatred of me is likely what started her daughter after me. When she finally took a breath...I decided it was time to speak my peace....
"Look we are married, so you just need to calm down and deal with it." and thats when her dad swung at me....
its the only time I ever saw him act even a bit like a man....or try to anyway.
It certainly didnt set a good tone for the rest of our relationship.
