What dirty little secret does your profession hide that the consumer should know?

Home health care for the developmentally disabled: no one cares. I mean, sure, many of the direct staff (like myself) do care, otherwise we wouldn't put up with the things we do for such low pay.

The higher ups though, the administration, does not care about your relative. They are a means to get the government to send the company a paycheck and most of those funds go directly to the company. I could beat the shit out of a client in front of the CEO of the company and as long as I didn't leave any marks that had to be reported to bdds, no one would care.

They don't care if the clients get taken into the community or get to do anything fun other than sit in their sparsely furnished rooms. You know why they encourage us to do it? It's a different billing service and they get more money for it.

They care even less about their employees. I made 10.50 an hour last month and just got a pay cut. I could make my same wages at McDonald's and not have to clean up human shit - or at least not as often.

Point is, don't let these companies convince you they care about your family and friends that they serve. You might get lucky and get a good direct staff person but chances are they'll be fired before too long. You can't do things like reporting abuse and neglect and still keep your job.
