What I learned from my first date in years

I would honestly not be too hasty to accept any of this as gospel until you hear it from a woman. I’d find a friend to vet this advice through in open and honest conversation and see if it parallels her experiences and interests. Furthermore what works for one person is a major turn off another — if there were hard and fast rules that worked, they’d be common knowledge. The only universal “skills” to call on in a date or interpersonal relationship of any kind are 1) improvisation and 2) respect/empathy. Be open-minded and ‘read’ the other person — what they want and what they’re comfortable with is often communicated in subtle and non-verbal cues. It’s a skill to be able to read these and confirm them, and a skill that can be developed with practice. You’re not going to get very far with a date if your confidence takes the form of telling them what they want or blindly following some game plan.
