Seems like I am really late to this post but my cousin, who was in his early twenties at the time, was an alcoholic and drug addict. There's a lot more to the story but essentially his parents got to their breaking point when he broke into and stole a car like some shit out of GTA V while he was fucked up on drugs and alcohol. He went to rehab out of state for around a year and had to drop out of college. It still took many years after rehab for him to actually recover and bounce back from all of that shit though. He tried to kill himself once or twice by overdosing but has recovered and found the support he needed.

I never had a relationship with him before now because we lived 4 hours apart and there is about a 10 year age difference. He's pretty much reformed now, has many job prospects and has ambitions to further his career in the future, he now has a girlfriend, and he's stopped drugs (excluding weed and the occasional beer). Overall he's a really awesome dude and I'd say we are good friends now. Glad to see him doing better and on top of things because I know a lot of people that have been in his situation and never made it out.
