What is something someone has said to you that has stuck with you forever?

Years ago, in college, I was at a party with my buddy, who was dating this cool punk-rock girl. I was fairly intimidated by her, she was a big part of a local scene that I was just getting into. Kind of dumb, but hey, I was young and finding my way.

Later that night, as things were winding down, this girl and I were talking with a few of her friends when conversation turned to my buddy flirting with another girl. As a joke, she says "Yeah, well maybe I'll leave with SteadyDietOfNothing!" All of her friends just cracked up. The idea of being with me was hilarious.

Fast forward a year. My buddy and her are no longer together, but we're all still friends. One day, she pulls me aside and tells me how much she feels for me. She had a full-on, tears-in-her-eyes, crush going.

Nope, I don't date my friend's exes, and the night of the party was burned into my head (as it is now). The whole thing was a bit of a bummer, but I learned something: She would have never made that joke if she knew me, because once she did, look what happened.

Many of the other commenters are echoing the same thing, I just wanted to share an anecdote to back them up. People make poor snap judgments, the woman in your story probably would have said that about anyone that wasn't a perfect visual 10. Maybe, like me, you're not quite a 10, but your personality might be a 20. Don't let shallow people bother you, they lose in the end.

Oddly enough, I came to this thread to post Fugazi lyrics, since those are what provided me with the life advice that stuck. Couldn't make up my mind on which were most important, so I'll just note the lyrics in the first few minutes of this track, because they go well with the topic at hand.
