What song lyric didn’t age well?

Sound of Music stood the test of time & will always be a top-beloved musical, especially this song!!

The characters are multidimensional & once you “get” Rolf’s position, and context of the time, you “get” the lyrics Bc you see what’s behind the lyrics—

Rolf is actually the scared one but doesn’t admit it as he’s expected to be a “man” & follow orders, but is clueless as a young boy, his naïveté shows...

In love w/ a chick who’s fam is behind enemy lines?? He’s is a true pawn that gets dicked around, struggles to show up for himself and his country ...

...so he “shows up” for Liesel... in his fucked up world this is his way of doing so, not at all recognizing he’s projecting his negative side onto her. He thinks he’s being the man he’s supposed to be. Rolf is Liesel’s ray of sunshine, a dash of hope, in this sick sad world.

Call it love, or call it a co-dependent coping mechanism to ya know, filter out the war??

Rolf’s heart is in the right place & his situation is a complete mind-fuck. As is Liesel’s. That’s why this song is so great! On the surface it seems so sweet & simple & oh-so-fun! ...but there’s so much more to it lol.

Crazy how Nazi deep Rolf eventually gets but anyways about the gazebo, loooove this scene, lyrics & all.

TL;DR Lyrics aged like a fine wine; Context matters.
