Oh shit Virginia? People are basically taught to fuck with English people in their schools. It's really strange, but I heard it has something to do with when in the World War II, the VA state department started funding the British army but the folks found their contributions to be useless and they were paying for it with their taxes so they started protesting against it, some people even went bankrupt because they were just charged even more taxes. All Virginians sympathised with the people that had to go through this so Virginians' connection with Britain started to turn sour and this irrational hate for Brits started evolving within Virginia. Since then the hate has followed generations but it's really much softer nowadays, although apparently history teachers seem to be still hurt and they tell all their students this bullshit so they will or will not fuck with Brits with really weird questions like you mentioned.
