What "you know what, just to be safe..." thing you did ended up saving your ass later?

This happened about a month ago, it's was about 2am and my entire family are asleep. I just finished watching a movie and I decide to go and make a cup of tea before going to bed. I'm fortunate to live in a double storey home but we do not have any security systems installed, this includes burglar bars. Mind you I live in South Africa, probably one of the most dangerous countries in the world and to make matters worse I do not live in a wealthy area. Burglaries are common in the neighbourhood I live in. So as I'm standing waiting for the kettle to finish boiling, I just have an urge to check the windows and doors. This is weird in itself because my dad generally checks the doors and windows before he goes to bed so I never feel the need to check them. Anyways, as I'm walking to the lounge a notice a breeze, I calmly pull back the curtain and see that a window is wide open, As were the rest of the lounge windows. Which is approximately about 8 in total, the front door wasn't locked, the sliding door wasn't locked and the bathroom window was open. Turns out my dad was so tired the pre ious evening that he forgot to close the windows.
