What is your advice for someone who is too afraid to go to the gym, because of the fear of getting weird looks for being fat?

As other have said, it's best not to worry about it but I get it, so here's some practical advice from personal experience - go during off-peak hours if you can. It's not true of every gym, but a lot of them are packed for a few hours a day and virtually empty the rest of the time. If you can join a 24-hour gym and keep weird hours, even better - I used to work swing shift so I got off work around 2am and went to the gym, NOBODY is at the gym at 2am.

Or, if you have the space and the superhuman patience to assemble one, there's always a home gym. There are some pretty decent ones that aren't that expensive, I had one for years until I moved and it wouldn't fit in my new place.
