A high school friend of mine, Leo, got married shortly after h.s. and started working in the family business. Good job, good pay. As the years go by, Leo starts rising in the biz and eventually becomes VP. He's a hard-working guy, so no one cries nepotism or anything like that.

People do get their nose out of joint when Leo hires his older brother, Stan, to work in the warehouse. Stan is lazy af, but he's sort of a good-time Charlie, so eventually, all that dies down.

So, Leo hires Stan's wife, Wendy, to work in accounting. Wendy's quiet and does her work. This time, no one says boo.

5 years later, the company is struggling. They're hemorrhaging money and are close to laying off a bunch of people. They figure it's due to the Great Recession, but someone starts to dig into the numbers and they find the cause: Wendy's been embezzling money for years.

And lots of money. So much money, in fact, that there's no way in hell that Stan didn't know, despite all his protests to the contrary. (Of course, I wondered how a guy who essentially carted shit around in a warehouse all day could afford jet skis, a boat, trips to Vegas, concerts, etc. all the time).

Wendy gets charged with a felony and goes to prison. Stan and Wendy divorce, file for bankruptcy and lose their house to foreclosure. Company sues Stan and Wendy for all they have (which isn't much; they didn't invest all their stolen $ in T-bills and resale on toys like jet skis and boats isn't much). So, both of them are on the street, one is a convicted felon, and neither has a pot to piss in or family to help them out.

Fucking greed, man.
