What's the scariest thing that's ever woken you up during the middle of the night?

I was living in a block of flats, and just as I was drifting off to bed (girlfriend was totally asleep next to me), the bedroom door opens and a man was stands there in the door way. Girlfriend and I are white (early 20s), and the guy was older (late 30s) Saudi Arabian guy with a fairly big beard.

So i'm like "...hello?" (i'm British, politeness is baked-in)

The guy says nothing at all. Just stares.

"hello? who are you?! Wait WHAT?! [girlfriend] GET UP! There's someone here!"

She makes sexy sleepy noises which doesn't help the situation at all.

So i start shouting "oi! oi who are you?! oi!"

The guy just stands there for like 15 seconds, doesn't say anything.

[oi'ing intensifies]

I should have pointed out that i'm totally naked, and my favourite sport is Wii sports. I'm skinny and pale. But in the dark I know if he can only hear me, and i don't get out of the bed, i can at least bluff. So I'm progressively going deeper with my ois. I couldn't think of anything else to do. I was completely vulnerable, and gf was sleeping closer to the door than i was, so i'd have to go over here, dick flopping around in the moonlight, or walk around the little space between the bed and the wall, probably stub my toe. So i'm like, panicking. Totally caught off guard and vulnerable.

Then all of a sudden the guy just casually walks out. I put my clothes on as quick as possible and run out the flat into the communal hallway, but he's gone. I take the stairs to the ground floor where there's a 24/7 porter/security guy, and i say "did you see anyone just now? Someone just walked into my bedroom!"

And he was like "was the front door open?"

And I was like, err, "I don't think so. Maybe. It doesn't lock itself when the door closes because i keep locking myself out..."

And he says, almost cheerfully - "it was probably a drunk. this happens every weekend in one of the 300+ flats in the building. Please get off at the wrong floor, and walk into what they think is their bedroom..."

o_o I never found out who the dude was, but the event totally changed my going-to-bed-routine for a decade. Most nights now i lock my bedroom door as well as all the other doors/windows. I keep all my valuables in a large safe. I always sleep closest to the bedroom door with my girlfriend furthest away, and I never ever sleep naked. Pants at a minimum. I also keep a light axe next to my bed now, just encase. Pics if you don't believe me, but the moral of the story is, once you have had a taste of feeling completely vulnerable you see the world through that lens for life (so far). Even if nothing bad actually happened to you. Even though the whole event lasted less than 20 minutes. Totally changed my life.
