What's the smartest thing you've witnessed your pet do?

No one is ever going to see this, but ...

My cat learned how to ring the doorbell at my old farm.

Scared the crap out of us the first night it happened. We were in a very rural area back then. It was after 1AM in the morning and we had just been sitting in the living room which had a clear view of our driveway, when all of a sudden "ding dong".

My SO and I look at each other. Did someone drive in and we somehow didn't notice? Impossible, head lights shine right into the room we were sitting in whenever someone drives in.

"Ding Dong"

I go to the bathroom window, no cars in the drive aside our own, but the angle doesn't allow me to see the front door.

"Ding Dong"

I start walking for the kitchen, I'm a little spooked tbh. It was a big county kitchen w/ a large glassed in front porch. Fully lit up inside, no lights on outside, so soon as I walk into that room, I'll be plainly visible.

I pause at the door, unsure if I really want to walk in.

"Ding Dong" "Ding Dong"

Now I can see a portion of the door, I should be able to see anyone standing at it taller than 2' high, but I can't. Now I don't know what the fuck to do. We're in the middle of nowhere, and backing on to nothing aside farmland and forest.

My SO comes downstairs with a 22 striding towards the door, swings it open, and immediately starts cursing a blue streak.

It was the cat.

And that cat used that doorbell everyday. It was a running joke w/ our friends "is someone here?", "No, it's the cat.", "The cat?", "Yes, I have to let her in."

That lasted until she started doing it at all hours of the morning. So my SO moved the door bell up about three feet (cat was sitting on the railing to use the door bell). It was so high up we had to leave a broom handle up for some people to reach it easily. Which led to, "Why is your doorbell 7' up?", which led to my SO cursing about my cat.

Ahh that cat, my faithful friend for 16 years. RIP Ember.
