What's some popular self-care/self-love advice that is actually really toxic?

I’ve been dealing with a ton of stress due to work, health and my roommates failing to clean up after themselves despite me bringing it up.

A couple days this week I hit a breaking point and when I crossed paths with one roommate I vented for about 10 mins about everything.

They told me to stop, that i was working myself up by talking about it and that I should just go distract myself.

I told them that’s what I’ve been doing nonstop for weeks and I honestly just needed to vent. But they insisted, “next time just go meditate or something.”

SOUNDS like good advice, but not when I’m clearly telling them I’ve been suppressing my stress and also when they went through a several month long mental health / stress episode I would constantly chat with them for HOURS and never tell them to STOP talking about issues unless they were hung up on them for days and days.

So to me “stop and go meditate” is 100% “stop telling me your problems, I don’t want to hear it.”
