Where do you draw the line where "graphics don't matter"?

I'm only on Chapter 3 so far, but it's already, hands down, my favourite game, and I've been playing games for a long time.

Mostly for the reasons you mentioned - it has a clear, well-defined, and (mostly) well-executed artistic vision that flows very naturally (especially the fluidity of cutscenes to gameplay), and, despite people whining about slang, really does still manage to come off as very authentic - and fundamentally human.

I'm not typically crazy about that genre of music, either (although was pleased when Alt J's Something Good opened Chapter 2), but it just worked for the characters, and was chosen well to portray what we needed to feel in the moment.

It all sort of feels like being a part of an extremely well-constructed TV show.

But I think what I liked the most, and what really sets it apart, is its exploration of female friendship and relationships in general. I've never seen anything quite like it before. I'm so glad they fought so hard to keep a female protagonist, because this game almost singlehandedly redefined how to see women and female-friendly storylines in videogames. It takes the heavily-demonized demographic of teenage girls, and actually makes you see them as complex, multifaceted human beings, and addresses a lot of unfortunately common problems for women in a very considerate way (especially for a game made by a pair of French dudes). They don't shove it down your throat with politically charged rhetoric or flash; they simply let your choices have meaningful consequences, and allow that to speak for itself.

You can learn a lot about people - and yourself - from this game.

Max and Chloe felt exactly like two sides of my own self when I was a teenager, and I've faced many of the same issues they have, and met with many of the same consequences.

It's the first time I've had that experience in gaming.

I'm just happy it exists. For all its faults, it really brought something unique to the table that no game I've encountered has managed to touch on yet.

In 10 years, I really hope to see it remembered as one of those games that changed everything.
