Where is the line between having precautions to stop shootings or terrorist attacks, and just infringing on people’s rights?

We already sacrifice civil liberties due to the many laws we have in western society.

And I detest that that is the case. I’m libertarian, so I think it is messed up that governments have infringed upon us so much already.

how comfortable are you with sacrificing liberties to give the government the power it needs.

I guess it depends by what power it “needs.” It doesn’t need nearly as much power as it currently has to simply protect our rights. But that’s a different discussion entirely, I suppose.

In the height of wars, I would sacrifice my liberties to help preserve my countries way of life if they needed to gather intelligence on citizens to ensure information isn't being fed to the enemy.

I honestly don’t know what to think of this. Looking into history, I see that a ton of wars have pointlessly been fought and I wouldn’t want any part of it. Sometimes your own country is in the wrong when it comes to war. It’s an uncomfortable question.

Any country you live in, you are bound legally by their laws. You can break those laws, but they have the ability to enact a punishment within the laws parameters. This is a liberty we have traded for security.

Wait, no law should infringe upon our liberties. Laws should protect our rights and liberties. I admit we have many laws that do infringe on us today, and I guess that goes along with you saying, “It’s different when a new law is introduced.” People notice it more often when it is a new law. But many of us are still fed up with the other infringing laws and have not become numb to them. More and more infringing laws will eventually break the camel’s back.

People often forgot that our threats are changing due to the technological advancements we are making.

True, threats change, but our rights as individuals don’t change, do they? And anyone could shoot a crowd up back in the day or make a bomb. But things have gotten worse, I suppose.

I’m not arguing, to be clear. I’m fascinated by this subject and am interested in other people’s take on it.
