White man with Asian girlfriend gets bullied/threatened on the Taiwan Metro...never seen such a bigot (NSFW)

I have to chime in as a white American female married to a Chinese national male.

My marriage has given him and his family some sort of status. Not a real, political status, but I am something for his mom to brag about. When I visit, she can't help but make a little bit of a spectacle when we walk the streets of the village, looping her arm in mine and calling out to her friends. My husband is generally a charismatic guy, but having me on his arm clearly inspired some kind of awe among his former classmates and friends. This did not offend me (though I was slightly embarrassed at first), and I was pleased that I could make my family look good, even though I know that being from the West isn't any more special than being from any other place in the world. I was glad I could "do" something for them despite language barriers.

My husband tells me that unlike in Japan or Korea, in his region of China a woman's family and friends might be very approving and proud of a woman for having a Western husband. China is a quickly developing country, but the majority of the population was born and educated in the 50's and 60's. Especially in cities where some semblance of a village lifestyle is still present, America is still this exotic paradise wonderland in which we lay on couches while people bring us platters of money.

That being said, you're right that this culmination of demographics set up the most likely scenario that would cause an unattractive local male, probably with a track record of rejection, to feel so inadequate that they react aggressively. This isn't necessarily a common occurrence in all of China, though. I wouldn't think it is in Taiwan, either. I didn't watch the entire video, but the Western man is clearly rather shocked that someone has reacted to him like this, which makes me feel that the majority of young males don't feel quite as threatened by a foreigner dating their women.
