Who is the bad guy in history who isn't actually a bad guy?

The Machiavelli worship in this thread is one of the weirdest things I've seen on reddit. The Prince is an important book, and a valuable read. But...

It was not one of the earliest books about political philosophy.

2000 years after Plato and Aristotle 1500 years after Cicero 1000 years after St. Augustine 300 years after Thomas Aquinas

And these are only the most obvious examples, and only in the West. It would be more accurate to say he was one of the earliest political philosophers in the modern west.

Of course, that also belies your claim that he was unbiased. 16th century Italian politics, believe it or not, is not emblematic of the history of human thought or social thought. Just as Plato and Aristotle wrote from a worldview that reflected Athenian democracy (and Plato would likely consider the titular Prince to be unjust and unwise), Machiavelli was influenced by his surroundings.

And of course, this entire discussion assumes away the existence of Asia or the Muslim world, which had their own values and political writers.
