Having been laid off from a couple of jobs, the desire to freelance has been strong for me to build stability. No job is forever, and I was shocked the first time I was laid off that most of my co-workers had no savings. I don't love doing freelance work, but I do love having something to fall back on. I worked with enough clients in the first five years of my career that I've been able to get a fair amount of work by word of mouth, and I've done some consulting this year for an agency that has paid fairly well for the amount of work it requires. I took a pay cut at one point because I was desperate for a job, and I regret it heavily. Never again.
