It's funny because non-hockey players/hardcore fans see the fighting and the constant scrums, and they think "geez, what a violent sport".

No.

The fights and the scrums are the players policing the game themselves so it doesnt become TRULY violent. And hockey can turn the most violent of all.

Hockey has higher speeds than can be attained by running (like football or rugby etc) so the collisions can, and ARE, more devastating. You can also target someones knee if you are a real asshole, and that is SORT OF unique to hockey because of the way the body mechanics work.

But also you have the fact that everyone carries a potential weapon, like this asshole in OP's video.
