Liberalism’s betrayal of itself—and the way back. To win against populists, centrists on left and right need to diverge not unite, says Hans Kundnani of Chatham House

First, Democrats and Republicans are both liberals. The distinction is that Republicans are liberal extremists who reside on the bleeding right edge of the political spectrum and Third Way Democrats are firmly in right wing territory based on their economic/fiscal policy positions. The problem with both groups is that their policy preferences have been failing the nation and most Americans for close to 5 decades. This is why the country has turned on them. We're looking at a credibility problem, not a messaging problem here.

Second, the idea that there's meaningful economic/fiscal gaps between neoliberals who call themselves "center left" or anywhere on the right is unfounded. We're talking about a completely eclipsed Venn diagram. The only economic or political centrists in D.C. are found in Progressive circles. How do we know this to be true? A true centrist balances the needs of the business community with the needs of society in ways that neither Third Way Democrats nor Republicans/Libertarians have ever done or do. Pushing the federal government and nation back to the political center doesn't make Progressive Democrats "far left", "socialists", or "communists", but it does make them credible since the national economy and federal government both function best when they serve both the business community and most Americans.
