It's a film on a nuclear bomb, so things that happen should be like a fireball. Sudden, massive, drastic actions. Thus, I won't stab the film with a fork. It's a symbol of a slow painful death. That's more for a murder or something, not a nuclear attack that causes things to vanish in an instant. I'll just rip the foil quickly and crumble it.
CLOSE UP READY MADE MEAL -- the PLASTIC FILM covering it riped off in an instant.
SMASH CUT TO:
CLOSE-UP TRASHBIN -- The film's now a round ball. It lands in the bin.

Time dials ain't got a beep when you start. Digital's the go. And I'll make the light from the clock red. Red --> death.

If I were you, I will do something interesting here. I will have a symbolic object that will be seen throughout the film (take influence from Jojo Rabbit --> Shoes, or American Beauty --> roses). For now, I will use RED GERANIUM FLOWERS as an example.
On the windowsill, we see a POT OF RED GERANIUM FLOWERS. It's badly taken care of, droopy, wilted.
But there's one PINK FLOWER BUD that's about to bloom. There's still hope.
And suddenly...
The BLINDS are drawn down, cutting our view from the FLOWER BUD, our sign of HOPE. The room is now drowned in dim darkness.

I would emphasize more camera movements at the mug sequence. This is how I would do it.
CLOSE-UP MUG -- We see David's MUG, half-filled with tea. The teabag floats miserably on the surface. It's a safe bet that the tea's already cold.
We PAN OUT TO MID-SHOT DAVID -- picks up the mug and takes a sip as he saunters ...
His face is a mix of pain, sadness. His eyes glassy, as if he wants to cry but can't bring himself to do that. He's depressed, all fucked up. We feel for him.
Preliminary character development is done here. We can now slowly dive into David.

Choice of replacement wallpaper: it's a good pick, overshadowing how this beautiful city will be completely destroyed in 5 minutes time. You can also consider iPhone's Black Earth wallpaper. It has a feeling of doom. Your choice.
