Action Bronson no longer playing Yonge-Dundas Square

This is a great comment that highlights the sneaky racism of our generation. Killer Mike is black so the reaction is "wow look at this empowered rapper venting his frustrations with socioeconomic and racial realities." Action is white so the reaction is "this sexist pig is going to turn people walking by Dundas Sq into rapists so let's think about the women here please."

There is this sense that Action should know better and that he should be more responsible for the messages in his music. But that same standard isn't held for Mike. People don't expect Mike to know any better, as if he's not capable of seeing the potentially harmful messages in his own music. In essence by holding Action to a higher standard than Mike people are showing how they don't expect the same level of intelligence and responsibility to the public from black artists as they do from white artists. When black artists make controversial art it's seen as art, but when white artists want to do the same suddenly the tumblr crowd is up in arms. Eminem said it best with his line "hip hop was never a problem in Harlem, only in Boston."

Personally I disagree with the entire notion of petitioning against any form of art, no matter how controversial it is, because art is supposed to be controversial, it's supposed to make you feel something even if it's uncomfortable. I don't understand what is accomplished by closing yourself off from art, but I guess most people in this city don't agree with me and that's fine. It's a shame that people who would have gotten to hear an extremely talented musician for free will no longer get to enjoy that because we want a society where people don't want to feel uncomfortable.
