Airbnb May Be Keeping 350 Units Off SF's Housing Market

Of course I would care if it affected me. But a girl across the hall is doing it and I've met a few new people - usually introduced by her - but they've always been quiet and respectful; I'm literally living the reality of your hypothetical and telling you it's no big deal. I'm sure there are instances where someone consistently subleases to rowdy jerks but I think those are the outliers, not the norm. Most people just want a place to sleep that's more affordable than a hotel and maybe has a kitchen and a few more amenities.

So yeah, I wouldn't live next to a crackhouse, but I'm living next to an airbnb and it's a non-issue in my life. It provides a lot of passive income for my neighbor who is a sweet girl that teaches middle school in SF so the extra money helps her a lot, and I meet a few nice people, and when I travel I can stay in nice apartments for 1/2 the cost of a hotel while experiences a more local-ish neighborhood/experience - I just see a lot of good and the only bad I hear about is by a vocal minority that try to persuade me with hypotheticals that have shown to be false in my experience.

I'm just trying to understand why you dislike it so much. It feels to me like people hate airbnb because they hate tech. Or they hate airbnb because they can't afford rent (this happens in New Orleans where they love tech but real estate prices are booming) and are looking at someone to blame. I just have a hard time understanding the hate for airbnb inherently and honestly, after this conversation, I'm no more enlightened. You hate it because you love zoning laws? Or you're worried that airbnb people will party and be loud all night? Because living next to a hotel is horrible? I used to live in Nob Hill 1 block from the Fairmont and about 10 other hotels and it was totally fine. That's million dollar real estate and it's next to hotels. Because if someone subleases their apartment for a week while on vacation that is the equivalent of living next to a crack house? I don't get it, honestly. I don't get why you hate airbnb. I think you hate tech. I think you hate wealthy people. I think you hate a lot of things and you're pointing all that hate at airbnb because it has things in common with what you hate. I just don't get it otherwise.
