Airplane pilots of Reddit, what was your biggest "We're all fucked up" moment that you survived and your passengers didn't notice?

Not the pilot or the passenger in this story, but my roommate told me this story right after it happened. He's a former mechanic and worked on mainly Beechcraft A36.

A pilot he knew went to fly an A36 to an airfield a few hours drive north and then pop back later in the day. He inspected it either the night before or the same day and everything was ordinary. On the way there no issues reported by the pilot, just needs to be refueled before he heads back out.

On the way back a friend of my roommate's hitches a ride with this pilot. The weather starts getting a bit worse (it was November so it was bit cold but nothing crazy) with wind and some rain, not to mention it's also getting dark. Now, my roommate's friend and the pilot take off for this fairly short flight back. Everything is good, ATC warns them about some weather on the way but nothing too serious.
