Am I being rude in lowering my tip?

UberEats has yet to make a dime of profit. They’re a public company, you can look that up. Investors were content eating losses for a decade on the bet that you can’t quit eating delivery even once they raise their price to make it profitable.

They’re either going to be right and you’re going to pay the fee or they’re going to be wrong and this concept might not be commercially viable. It might only be for rich people.

But there’s no greed happening here, you’re seeing the loss of investor subsidies and soaring labor and gas costs at the same time. It’s expensive to have someone cook you food and deliver it to your door.

That all said… you’re thinking about the tip wrong IMO. Don’t feel bad because you couldn’t tip as much. The order is offered to drivers until someone accepts it. If it takes forever, Uber either finally offered someone a bonus to just get it done or your tip wasn’t compelling so it wasn’t accepted until offers died down. But if your food is there in a reasonable amount of time, someone thought you were offering em a good tip.

It’s not about what anyone thinks is fair, it’s about paying the market rate if you want someone to pick up your order while it’s hot. It depends a ton on where you live, so I can’t give you a rule of thumb, but you can adjust and see how much you have to pay in your area.
