My parents were both law enforcement officers.
When my mom would drive me around in her Jeep there was never an issue. She is not a great driver and tends to bend the rules of the road. She was pulled over once for making an illegal left turn, informed the officer that she was a LEO, only showed him an ID that identified her as an LEO, and let them know she had a firearm in the vehicle. The officer ran her through their system and let her go minutes later with a smile and a "Have a nice day!".
When my dad drove me around in his Audi he would get pulled over every few months. He is a much safer driver and always obeys the rules of the road. In one instance, he informed them that he was an LEO, gave the officer his LEO ID and driver's license, registration, and insurance, and informed them that there was a firearm in the vehicle. The officer made my dad get out of the car while they took all his paperwork and ran it through their system. They kept us waiting there for what seemed like forever and eventually gave my dad a ticket for something arbitraty. The officer was rude and curt the entire time and ended the encounter with a "You're free to go."
My mother is white. My father is black. This happened in what is considered one of the most progressive areas in the country just over 15 years ago. Seeing the difference in how my parents were treated has left me distrustful and wary of the police ever since. Watching all these videos of the police shooting black people that have come to light in recent years makes me even more afraid. What if my dad didn't have an ID identifying him as a LEO? What if we ran into the wrong cop on the wrong day?
Now I have even more fear because of my son. He is going to grown up to be a very tall Brown man but he is also autistic and non-verbal. What if my son wanders and when the police come they see my son playing with a toy car? He wouldn't be capable of following their commands if they mistake it for a gun. He would get shot at just like what happened to Charles Kinsey and the autistic man he was trying to take care of in Florida.
I avoid the police like I would a rabid dog.
