In America's current polarizing political scene, is there any argument that could make a Bernie supporter condone or even understand Trump and his supporters? Or vice versa? Have we lost the ability to communicate ideas over party lines? What can be done?

I think we are in an interesting position right now. We are at a time of very high economic inequality, and at the same time still in a sort of state of war. Both of these things have always lead to very, very high political polarization and I think both Sanders and Trump reflect this very well.

People look to, and think, extreme measures are necessary to correct the course. It's whether you support either Sanders or Trump you think the over-correction needs to be done. People start to blame relatively understandable problems (and how they are fixed) on something entirely different, usually ostracizing the other side for it.

Immigration has lead to our economic downfall? Hardly, but you're going to be hard pressed to find someone who supports trump that thinks otherwise. Any decent economist will be able to tell you that it's simply not the case.

At the same time you have a politician like Sanders who wants to steer the country towards more how our Scandinavian friends do things. The real problem here is that there is going to be a level of taxation we haven't seen for many decades and I really doubt he would get any support from the republicans, let alone most democrats. It's an idealist's campaign more than anything.

So, no, you won't really get either side to see eye-to-eye on much even though a lot of Sanders and Trump supporters are often terribly confused (understandably so) people. The only thing they will fundamentally agree on is that the system needs to be dismantled or changed in dramatic ways in almost every aspect.

I've seen lifetime-liberal friends jump to support trump, and some fairly conservative sympathize with Sanders. It's a very hard time to become politically aware because if you want to support the two main headlining candidates, you have to pick a side. I wouldn't be surprised, once Sanders loses the primaries, for some of his supporters to jump to Trump on the sole basis of extreme change.
