Anyone else notice a rise in anti Uk sentiments online ?

Can’t speak much for the opinions of people elsewhere in the world, but as a Brit now living in the USA, I can certainly see where some of the sentiment comes from on this side of the Atlantic.

I’m not knocking the UK as a whole here - theres many things that I’m immensely proud of about the UK, but theres a lot of stuff that’s pretty embarrassing too, especially post-Brexit and the change in perception on the world stage that this has caused.

I do think there’s a really good point to be made that collectively, the UK has a vastly over-inflated opinion of itself, certainly economically. I think that people elsewhere in the world pick up on that.

The idea that Britain can somehow go it alone in the world without being in some kind of frictionless trading pact like the EU is just jingoistic bullshit and does come across as very arrogant.

Without the EU, the UK is ultimately always going to be whoring itself out to whatever superpower or trading block they can form a beneficial relationship with from a position of weakness.

I think that the way the UK tries to cuddle up to the United States as though Britain has much useful to offer to them is quite laughable, frankly.

In economic terms, yes, the UK does a lot of trade with the US compared to other nations of a similar size.

However, to the US, this is still a drop in the ocean. If Britain was a US state, it would have be the 49th poorest. The only state with lower GDP is Mississippi. That’s certainly not to say that the UK is a poor country, but on a superpower scale, it’s tiny and has been since the end of WW2. And when making trade deals with superpowers like the US or China is going to be a crucial part of your economic survival post-Brexit, that’s going to be a factor.

To the UK, trade with the US is pretty crucial to it’s economic survival. To the US, it’s actually fairly irrelevant in the big scheme of things.

Of course, that’s not to say that all Americans have an unfavorable view of Britain, I’d actually say that the majority still see the UK favorably (if somewhat irrelevant) and I’d actually say that the opinion of the UK has increased fairly dramatically amongst the political right here as they like the idea of the UK ‘taking back it’s independence’, etc. Trump voters love it.
