Why are we not funding this?

I don't know if people are as creative as they think they are. Sure we can make up arbitrary dynamics and abilities, but they tend to be two dimensional and lack in subtleties. And we generally tend to rely on outside influences to inspire these dynamics to being with.

But the thing is we have tons of information on space. And a gaming platform could be an effective way to convey that information to the public. We've observed planets breaking apart, planets orbiting backwards, planets that are tidally locked. And there are probably planets that form around black holes or wander aimlessly through space. Also, is it really that creative to add a fluorescent pink sky to an alien planet? What if we could identify the materials in the atmosphere through spectroscopy, or just the naked eye? Carbon worlds would be brown and rain hydrocarbons. Ammonia worlds would have rivers of yellow. Water worlds would border on mini neptunes. There's so much diversity that video game developers are leaving out because a) they don't have the background, and b) because they are expected to program these independently, rather than it just emerging from the framework. Star bound had poison or not poison. What if that poison was sulfuric acid, and you needed special space suits that wouldn't dissolve? Or to regulate air pressure so that you're ship wouldn't implode. That could totally change the dynamic of destructible space battles, and colonizing hostile worlds.
