Why are people obsessed with colonising Mars but not the Moon?

Well, I'm not sure that is quite true.

Because of the Moon's proximity to Earth, and it's extremely low gravity-well, it's much easier to simply accelerate, and then fling material off the surface of the moon, towards Earth.

There, that material could be used to eventually build millions (upon millions) of rotating habits--perfect little oasis-cities in orbit (filled with lush tropical jungles) while also having the benefit of being close to home--Earth).

That said, I'm more interested in seeing a colony on Mars first... just because... well... it's more than just a moon, it's an entire planet.

But, if we can colonize Mars, then we can certainly colonize the moon, and both will likely happen pretty much simultaneously.
