Why are people so passionate about real estate investing? I believe the stock market offers a higher long term return for much less effort. What am I missing?

Well, to put this into perspective, I have only bought parcels of vacant land, all within the last 5 years. That way the taxes are low and I'm not having to upkeep things. Second, I'm now sitting on what I have. There is going to be a huge boom with a high profile manufacturer building a large factory in the immediate commute area.

What's funny is that all of my purchases (three in all) are unrealised as I keep rolling it over into the next purchase. So, I bought a 10 acre parcel first at $25k cash, and sold it a year later for $40k. The next was $50k, sold for $80, and the last and currently owned is about 75K, and will hold on till this housing boom hits.
