Atheist here: Could you ever take into consideration that atheism can often be the easiest way to protect oneself from corrupt religious groups formed to feed off people’s money and push dangerous beliefs?

If I understand what you're saying - then, correct! We currently live IN Satan's cesspool. He's got a remarkable work ethic and has made GREAT progress here, plus humans have flawed, ego-centric human nature and everyone is (hopefully) fighting their way to the Truth!

However, that is one of those amazing things about Christianity. It's not complicated, at all. In fact, it's remarkably simple. So, in those cases of Catholicism (I was raised Catholic), and learning about the Apocrypha "legitimacy", or as others have said about "hating gays" - the answer is surprisingly simple: go back to the Scripture. There's not a whole lot to argue, because there is only one, actual truth.

It sounds like your saying: b-b-but there's corrupt preachers who steal old ladies money, there is Westboro Baptist Church (the "God hates fags", people) who claim to be Christian, etc - and what the thread poster explained, and I'm underscoring is: yeah, that exists, and it totally sucks. But if you are talking about actual Christianity, which is absurdly simply (just the Gospels, really, and what happen to that one Man) - that's not what that is. These are examples of corruption, evil, ego, and weakness are things that Christians hate, too.
