Aussie service expectations

Have you ever dealt with a split check? It's an excuse for the worst of humanity to argue over cents. I can't imagine why it is common in the states. Anyone splitting a bill isn't paying a tip.

I should clarify that by "split check" I meant separate bills for different parties at the same table. So, I get a bill just for what I ordered, and you get a bill with your stuff on it. We then both go to the till and pay our own bills. I could have been clearer with what I meant.

I've found Aussies to be very friendly and don't have a problem asking how things work, but it gets a little old having to figure out how each place is different. I've walked into places and had to question if they were even open, since there wasn't an employee in sight and no signs or anything to indicate what I should do.
