  1. placebo effect is really strong here, because people have much higher expectation towards a famous and infamous drug, compared to some anonymous substance synthesized in some pharma lab. Additionally, those folks who sign up for these studies often generally have a pretty favorable mindset towards drugs.

e.g. in this study placebo-cannabis with no active substance in it whatsoever had a ridiculously strong effect on PTSD, even outperforming standard psychotherapy.

  1. the thing with psychedelics is, that it is pretty impossible to to a proper double-blinded study evaluating them. Thus, you cannot tell how much of the effect is due to placebo (probably a lot, but no one really knows)
