Bald eagle gets a 3-D printed beak

First of all, your idea about everyone registering their gun and having to be visited by an inspector is fucking insane.

That's why it was a thought experiment, not something I advocate. And I never said anyone had to be made a criminal, they would just lose the right to own firearms. If you lose a gun it would be a bummer that you lose your right to own one, but the point would be to make sure you secure your firearms, keep track of them, and don't transfer them illegally.

Your "less guns = less homicides" issue is completely flawed in its premise. That's like saying less cars = less car deaths.

This is never a convincing equivalency. Cars have a purpose other than inflicting harm, and our modern economy is completely dependent on them. Furthermore, a student typically has to spend, at the minimum, several weeks learning how to use a car before they're allowed to operate one independently, unlike firearms.

But the idea that you are ever going to take all the illegal guns off the streets of the U.S. is impossible.

Of course it is. But that isn't the point. If the government made a concerted effort and offered pecuniary rewards, the number could be greatly diminished. That's why you slow new weapons entering circulation while slowly removing illegal ones. You could end up like Japan after a great deal of effort. Again, I'm not an advocate of this but it's helpful to think about it.

Your correlation between number of guns and deaths is flawed. There is much to be considered.

This is why you actually read the report I linked in my last comment. It takes these things into consideration. Social scientists are smart and well trained and understand sources of bias better than you or I do. They control for a lot of things, including population density and demographics.

Are you telling me you'd move to Chicago now and be happy with a handgun weapons ban?

I live in Chicago. I mentioned this in comments above. There is no handgun ban. It was revoked by the Supreme Court in 2010. The only law specific to Chicago today is that you need to take a class and pay a fee to legally own a firearm in the city. Otherwise the city functionally has the same firearm laws as the rest of the state.

I don't want any law abiding citizen to have their gun taken away.
